I own a 1981 FX low rider.  I have begun rewiring since it is old and coroded.  I replaced the rear brake light and had it working fine.  Now the light will not automaticaly turn on when the ignition is on, but when brake is depressed, it glows.  I have been following and replacing all wires in need with appropriate connectors.  I know I have a few shorts in the system, but I believe this is due to grounding.  I can not figure it out.  Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

I am a little confused here. Are you talking about the brake light or the running light in the brake?

I am sorry, I am referring to the running light in the brake.

Answer
Check your wiring again. Sounds like you have the hot wire to the running light connected to the brake switch or they are touching somewhere. There should be only two wires going to the rear light itself so the housing is the ground.
Good luck and happy riding
