Motorcycle Repair: speedo problem 1996 fxd, turn signals, fxd

Question
I have a problem with speedometer on 1996 DYNA FXD.It has lighting, but no needle function or odometer reading. Also, the turn signals will not shut off automaticly, this must be done on a  manual basis. The speedo is original, and has 9688 miles, this happened in the last week.  thanks for help...DAC

Answer
Either the speedo drive is bad or the cable or the speedometer. First, remove the cable from the back of the speedo. Now jack the bike up with the front wheel off the ground spin the wheel. Is the cable turning? If not, then remove the cable from the drive unit. Make sure the cable is not broken. If it is, replace it. If its not then remove the drive unit. Looking inside of it, you should be able to see it turning when you turn the drive part the goes to the wheel. If they are both good then the speedo is bad and needs to be replaced. I would suspect that its either the drive unit of the cable.
On the turn signals, the turn signal canceller unit is bad and needs replaced.
Good luck and happy riding
