Motorcycle Repair: star classic, valve clearances, valve clearance

Question
I recently bought a 1999 650 star classic it has 9000 miles everytime I ride it it turns off on me after running it for a while(20 mins or so) It onlly does this when I stop the bike at a light or have to slow down for traffic. I have also notice a clicking sound coming from the engine and suspect it to be the valves. please help me.

Answer
Hi Franco,

It is normal for engines to make clicking or tapping sounds. This happens when valve clearances become excessive. For engines with hydraulic valve adjusters, check the oil lever or change the oil. Other engines require periodic valve clearance adjustments.

The stalling problem may be an intake air leak, out of synch carburetors, or other. I would need to perform some checks to diagnose the problem accurately.
