Motorcycle Repair: 99 v-star 650, air fuel mixture, diagnostic checks

I have a 99 v-star 650 that is running rough
It has no pick up. I have to open the throttle
all the way to get it to go. I took the air cleaner off and if I cover the air box it smooths
out. could it be a problem with the air injection
system.  Thank you

Hi Jim,

When you restrict air by covering the airbox, performance improves. This indicates the air-fuel mixture is lean (too much air-not enough fuel). Could be a couple of causes. Have to perform some diagnostic checks to verify source of problem.

I recommend the Service Manual for repairs and troubleshooting. It will pay for itself with the first repair. Has procedures and illustrations. Use AllExperts to compliment the manual.
