I recently bought a 1994 883 sporster it ran good except for when you would get on it in any gear it would sputter about three time (like it was choking down) and then take off. I was leaking oil from the front rocker box and when i bought it the lady told me that the bike had sat up for a few years so i decited to put a 1200 kit in it. The kit included new pistions, rings, and cans. I installed all of the new parts along with the original heads. The kit did not require any head work. I assimbled the engine and on my first test drive it did the same thing that it was doing before. I installed new plugs and plug wires with the kit and i checked the resistance in the coil. I fiddled with the carb moved the jet needle up and down on the notches and it did not make any difference. I checked the float for holes and the setting of it and they both were ok. I have drag pipes, a 5 inch KN filter and a 1200cc kit do i need to re jet the carb or is the problem somewares else. I also checked the timing and it was good. I will appericate any help because i spent a lot of money on paint and parts and i cant even use my bike. I have called the dealership but they dont seem to ambitious about helping me I am not to proud to ask for help so any info you can give me will be much welcomed.

what carb are you running on this bike?

I have a stock CV carb and my compresion ration on the bike is 10:1

Answer -
replace #40 low speed jet with #45 and turn air/fuel mixture screw out 3 full turns from slightly bottomed.

There already is a #45 jet in the carb apparently the person who i bought the engin from had either rejetted the carb or tried to work on it himself because none of the jets in the carb match up. I am going to buy a new carb which one is better the "S&S super E" or the Mikuni HSR42? Which one will give me better performance and which will be easiest for me to tune and work on? Or should i just rebuild the one i have with new jets, piston, and accelerator diaphram, or is one of those two carbs that much better than the stock one?
         Thanks Jason

Answer
the Mikuni is the only carb to buy. S&S is junk next to the Mikuni. Then get rid of the drag pipes because you will NEVER NEVER NEVER get the bike tuned correctly with the Junk pipes you have on your bike,Get a white brothers E-Series 2 into 1 exhaust and you will have your hands full tring to stay on the bike.  Johnny
