Motorcycle Repair: goldwing rough rough running and smoking, tooth comb, piston rings

Question
Hi chris. I just bought a 1987 interstate gl1200 to fix up. this bike has
been stored outside for 2 years unprotected and all the gas was run out
until engine died. Throttle was stuck and i got it freed up just by
working it and the chokes were stuck on one side. after freeing the
chokes up i got it cranked. it smokes like a fog machine, will not idle
and i have gas running out of a 3", 90 degree hose coming out of a small
plastic piece with 2 other hoses running down to near the carb on each
side. any and all information would be appreciated. i have lots of work
ahead of me and i need all the help i can get

Answer
Hi David.
Excessive smoke from an engine usually means that the piston rings are bad or that the cylinders need rehoning.  Nine times out of ten, the two go hand in hand and in your case it may be what the bike needs, among other things.

Fact is, the bike sat exposed and unused for a couple of years, so the carbs need a proper disassembly cleaning.  Chances are the rings have rusted and are now scoring the cylinder walls.  You could have a lot of work a head of you to get this bike running right again, but it will be worth the effort.

Get the repair manual for the bike and go over everything with a fine tooth comb.

Make sure that everything is within specs and none of the moving parts are are rusting away or that the rubber is dry-rotted and cracking.  That could also be part, if not all of the fuel leak problem as well.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
