Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha choke, battery fluid, fj1200

Question
Chris,
I tipped over my 1989 Yam FJ1200 on its right side (in my driveway).  Nothing seemed wrong at first and it restarted with a little effort and spilled gas.
Two days later I tried to start it and it would not turn over.  Battery and elec seem fine, makes correct sounds, it just wont ignight.  The choke is stuck in the down (off) position.  It still smells a little gassy.  I looked to see if the choke was stuck under the seat area but it seems fine.  What to do?  Did I flood it?  Wouldn't it drain in 30 mins if I did...?
Any ideas before I havi it towed to the repair shop.

Answer
Hi  Karl.
Normally, a high-side fall over will not kill the bike's electrical system.

I seriously doubt that your choke is the cause of your problems.

What you may want to check is your fuses and fuse connections.  Your ignition fuse is most likely the culprit here.  If not then start by checking the ignition system for shorts, grounds/arcing points (against the frame or engine) and bad/loose connections.  It is possible that the coils may have decided that this was a good time to fail as well, so check them in accordance with the test proceedures and specs in the repair manual.

Also check your battery fluid levels and check the battery with a hygrometer as well to see if any cels went bad from the fall over.

Good luck.
