Motorcycle Repair: Electrical problem, harley sportster, luck mike

Question
I was the guy that was asking you questions about the 1984 Harley Sportster XLX that I laid down.  Well, it turns out it was the starter that was messed up, I got it rebuilt and put back in the bike.  Put the whole thing back together and went to start it...no luck.  Then I noticed the thingamajig that holds the brake that sits on the handlebars next to the accelerator was not actually touching the accelerator.  I pushed it together and voila, I could start it all of a sudden.  So then, I was obviously happy.  I noticed also that my left side blinker would work now.  Then, I was about to take the bike for a test run, so I had it backed out..flicked on the headlight, and...it died.  And I couldn't start it again.  and now when I have the key on, the left side blinker won't work anymore.  So, I'd guess it's an electrical problem, but I don't know how to fix it or where to start so any suggestions you would have would be great.  Sorry this is so long.

Answer
You do have a short in the bike. The part that you slid over only makes the brake light go off. It has nothing to do with the bike running or the headlight.
What you need to do is get a service manual if you are going to try to fix it yourself. In it you will find a wiring diagram. You will also need a test light. I wouls start at the handlebar wires and check the wired behind the headlight. Finding a problem like this is going to be trial and error until you find it. Follow the diagram fron the battery to the wires in the handle bars and headlight.
Good luck
