Motorcycle Repair: Front brake - standard, honda shadow ace, honda shadow ace 750

Question
Mr. Shively:

I own a 2003 Honda Shadow Ace 750.  Since purchasing the motorcycle in August, 2003, I've only been caught in the rain a couple of times.  As long as it has been dry, I've ridden the motorcycle nearly every day, at least back and forth to work, even through the winter months.  The motorcycle currently has approximately 4,000 miles on the odometer.

During the course of the winter, I developed a brake squeak on the front end.  This occurs only during very light braking and while turning.  The loudest "squeak" occurs while simultaneously turning and going over a bump, such as a large joint in the concrete, causing the suspension to cycle.

This nuisance becomes more noticeable when the temperature falls (40's).  It becomes less to non-existent in warm (70's-80's) temperatures.  Torquing the front axle bolt a few pounds over spec at first seemed to correct the squeak, but this may just been due to a temperature change.

(1) Assuming that the brake caliper release and "wheel-wobble" are within spec, is there a product that can be applied to the rotor without removing the caliper to eliminate the squeak?

(2) Is there a particular lubricant for the caliper to ensure that it is fully releasing on consistent basis?

(3) Any other suggestions?

Answer
Hi Jim,

Jim: Assuming that the brake caliper release and "wheel-wobble" are within spec, is there a product that can be applied to the rotor without removing the caliper to eliminate the squeak?

Mark: Try a can brake cleaner to clean the discs and calipers.

Jim: Is there a particular lubricant for the caliper to ensure that it is fully releasing on consistent basis?

Mark: I use a light coating of assembly lube or anti-seize.

Jim: Any other suggestions?

Mark: You may disassemble the calipers and check for corrosion on pins and brake fluid gumming around and under piston seals. Ensure rubber dust boots are in good condition.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
