Motorcycle Repair: GS550L acceleration problem, air fuel mixture, oil seals

Question
Hi Mark,
I just got a GS550L (GN72L) (1986, European) from my brother and I'd like to fix a thing or two on it. Hope you can help. Btw, I have a copy of the parts assembly of the bike.

My problem: When accelerating the engine doesn't react in the first instance. The first moment, when turning the accelerator, nothing happens. Then, 0.5-1sec later, the acceleration kicks in and I can get going. This happens at any speeds although not as significant if standing. I do also have the impression it is more severe when the engine is cold. I've checked the airfilter and it is ok. Do the carbs need cleaning? I don't thinks it's been done before, not recently anyway. If yes, how do I go about it?

The engine is also leaking a bit of oil on either side and on the top. Is it difficult to replace all the sealing on the engine block? Could you give me some hints what to look out for? I'm just asking this cause I guess it might be less work if I do both at the same time.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot,

Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,

The carbs may need cleaned, tuned, or both. Throttle slides may be sticking a bit, pilot circuit may slightly obstructed, could be rich air-fuel mixture, or ignition fault causing the hesitation.

Start with carb removal and inspection. Perform a thorough cleaning and synchronization. The problem will likely be fixed.

Oil seals or gaskets may be leaking oil. Replacing seals and gaskets is not a dificult task.

I'll return several files on all repairs to your email. Contact me as necessary via email for assistance.
