Motorcycle Repair: 1984 honda shadow- lost a cylinder- spits &pops, torque readings, coolant system

Question
when i pull this old mule down to find out whats wrong are there any little things i need to watch for. i.e. timing chain falling into crankcase, hidden o-rings etc.it acts like the head gasket is gone as exhaust comes out radiator. the giggle head who attempted to rebuild it was apparently infatuated with blue silicone sealant.any info would be appreciated. thanx bruce.

Answer
Bruce,
Sounds like the best scenario would be having to just replace the head gasket.  Worst case, you have a cracked head or block.  Silicone ok for the coolant system but not for anything else.  I believe head gasket should go on clean and dry and make sure the flanges are clean and dry.  Pay close attention to tightening the head bolts down.  First torque them down to half the required ft. lb. amount in a zig-zag fashion (opposit corners) then finally to the required amount on your second pass.  After running for 1/2 hour, recheck torque readings.

Good luck,
Mike
