Motorcycle Repair: points and condenser, kawasaki ke100, point gap

Question
I recently bought a 1976 kawasaki ke100 that has been stored for the past 20 or so years.  I've rebuilt the carb, replaced the clutches, air filter and spark plug. It cranks and runs out perfect but after a couple of miles, it starts to spit, sputer and back fires.  I checked to see if it was getting fire to the plug and it wasn't.  After it cools down, it starts up and runs fine again.  The bike only had 96 original miles put on it before it was stored so I didn't bother to check the breaker points since it was getting good fire.  Could this be the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

thanx,
A.D.

Answer
Alan,
Resistance tends to highten with hotter tempatures.  It is possible you have a weak connection at your coil or stator or possibly a weak coil itself however, points are known for there unreliability and you may be dealing w/ this kind of problem.  If you decide to replace the points, you must also replace the condensor.  You must set the timing and point gap correctly.  If you are unfamiliar w/ this procedure puchase  a good aftermarket manual for a full explanation w/ pictures.  If this doesn't solve the problem you will want to check the coil's high AND low tension resistance, the manual will show you how to do this as well, you will need a multimeter that has a resistace/ohm setting.  Chances are your points are the culprit.

Good luck,
Mike
