Answer
Hi Ian.
Since you are a newbie rider, I will tell you the basics here that you need to know.

1)  Almost everything that you will ever need to know about fixing your bike is contained in a book called a repair manual.  They make them for every make/year/model out there.  You can get them from the dealership, local bike shop and online.  That's your first thing to do.

2)  Get a decent set of metric tools (allen wrenches, sockets and combination wrenches), beyond the tool kit that came with the bike.  Socket sets are fairly inexpensive and can be supplementedto suit your specific needs.

3)  Get a multimeter and battery hygrometer for testing and checking the electrical components.

Now, as far as your brake problems.  The disassembly proceedures are in the repair manual.  You will need to disassemble the calipers to do this work.

Use a sanding block (the foam kind that is wrapped in sandcloth, like they use for light bodywork, which you can find at the auto parts store) and lightly sand it till it is smooth and shiney all around.  A little Marvel Mystery Oil on the pucks as you sand them will prevent excessive scoring on them and help break up any rust or dirt that is causing the problem.
Then reassemble the calipers and bleed the brakes.

Let me know how it goes.
Good luck.
