Motorcycle Repair: CBR 600 starting problem, blue flame, cbr600

Question
Chris,

I'm a bit of a newcomer to motorcycling and have a 1992 CBR600 in the garage that hasn't been started for about three months. The battery has been charged, but when I try to start it there is a misfire. A very violent intermitent misfire with a blue flame out the back and it will not start. Could you tell me which bits to check first? Until leaving it to go flat it ran fine.

Cheers.

Answer
Hi Leigh.
Since the bike sat for a long time, the fuel in the system has partially evaporated, leaving a residue that we call "varnish" in the system.

You will need to remove and safely dispose of all of the old fuel and replace it with fresh fuel.

You also need to pull and clean the carbs as that is where the worst of it is.  Double-check the synchronization of the carbs when you install them and you should be fine.

Good luck.
