Point blank, 1974 honda xl125, does have to have a battery to run, I have been given the run around as to right answer

The Engine will start and run just fine from the power provided by the Magnito.
The Lights and other electrical may have issues without a battery.
Electrical spikes often occur when a battery is not present and this can burn out bulbs
and cause other electrical damage..
