Motorcycle Repair: Honda CB650Z starter problems, starter clutch, honda cb650z

Question
Hi,I have a CB650Z 1981. The starter motor seems to be working OK.but when cold the starter clangs and crunches and usually ends up just whirring over.Occasionally it will start and then when hot is almost always OK.Opinion amongst my friends seems to be divided between it being the starter motor not putting out enough power to throw the starter clutch in.Or it being the starter clutch itself. If this is the case I gather it.s an engine out job.Are their any unforseen difficulties I should be aware of before I start. Thanks for any help you can offer...paul

Answer
Hi Paul,

I suggest removing the starter motor and cleaning the excessive build up of carbon powder from inside it. Then, if the problem continues, do the starter clutch fix.

Either way, review the service manual before working and keep it handy. Visit "www.bikebandit.com" to see exploded views of parts on-line (parts microfiche).

You and your friends are right with your diagnosis. I have had success with the above. If the clutch is defective, then it's an assault on the engine.
