Motorcycle Repair: Carb. Jetting, yamaha dt 175, denver colorado area

Question
Hello, you've helped me before about a 1974 Yamaha DT 175-no spark question, so here's another, I'm buying a 1980 Yamaha XT500(4 stroke) from the Denver Colorado area(mile high elevation), I live in Tulsa, Ok(aprox 750' elevation) how do I go about re-jetting the carb. for my altitude?   sizes etc..
Thanks, Jeff York

Answer
Jeff,
I'm not sure of the stock setting (e-clip grove on main needle) for that model, I'm guessing the third or middle groove, there should be a total of 5.  The fuel/air screw should be about 1-1 1/2 turns out from seated.  You'll have to experiment with the needle position by taking notice of the idle consistancy, exhaust, and overall performance.  The plug won't tell much for many miles being that this is a 4 stroke.

Good luck,
Mike
