Nissan Repair: 01 nissan altima 3.5L 5 speed

QUESTION: help someone, I have a 01 Nissan Altima 3.5l 5 speed. car shifts good in gears 1-4 but I have to keep pressure on the gear shift to keep it in 5th. also it will not go into reverse gear. use to go from 1rst to reverse and it would work but now it's like the shifter hits a hard place. any response would be appreciated

Can you place it in reverse with the engine off?

Probably sounds like the gear synch is off. If you have a local trans shop near you, that would be the way to go.

QUESTION: Thanks for your prompt response. Is this procedure expensive. Once again thanks for everything. Ps,at some time it would go into reverse with the engine off, but not now. Finally got it in reverse and now it takes alot of effort to get back in neutral.

Hi Warren -

Yes, it does seem like it is the synch gear. It is usually less expensive at a trans shop, so that is why I recommended that. May be about $500? That is about how much it would cost here.

Also might be a good idea to check the clutch at the same time since all has to come out anyway.
