Nissan Repair: brake lights stay on, nissan altima, headlight harness

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1997 Nissan Altima break lights stay on I changed the switch on brake pedal ensure button is all the way in still stays on. I changed the light/signal switch lights still stay on. I do not know of any other switches that are connected to the tail lights

ANSWER: Mike,

Disconnect the switch at the pedal and see if it stays on.  That is the break point for the circuit.  You do not have a trailer harness on the car?  If so, that could ground the circuit and keep the lights on too.  There is no relay on the brake lights.  The switch above the pedal is the open and close for the circuit.

QUESTION: I have disconnected the switch at the pedal and the break lights still stay on. If there would be a short some place I really do not know to look

Answer
Mike,

You are going to have to look at the sockets and see which filament is illuminated.  Is the high mount brake light on too?  Make sure the switch you have disconnected is the brake switch and not the cruise control deactivation switch.  Otherwise, you will have to back trace the wires from the back to the front.  If the filament is lit that goes to the headlight switch you will need to diagnose the headlight harness.
