Nissan Repair: catalytic converters, nissan xterra, catalytic converters

Question
My question is concerning a 2003 Nissan xterra 4x4 v6(3.3L). The check engine light is on. The car will only run for a short time and then it starts jerking and missing and popping and cracking. I was told by a certified mechanic that it is all 4 catalytic converters gone bad. There is no rattling from the exhaust. He said there is something blocking the exit of gasses and it is causing the engine to choke out.Does this sound right? All 4 converters going out at the same time ? I had a jeep that the converters kept going out and it ran just fine, just made alot of noise.

Answer
Hi Glen -

All CATS out sounds very fishy to me.

The first step is always to get the diagnostic on the engine light. I will need to know the code(s) that are causing the engine light to illuminate. Have you done that test? It is called OBD (On Board Diagnostic). I think Autozone will do that for free.

Let me know
