Nissan Repair: auto gearbox, manual gearboxes, tin snips

hi i have a nissan largohighway star 2ltd auto 1996
been having trouble with reverse not engaging will select but greating noise coming from the box. it will select all forward gears and drives nice.anyway i have a bit of experance with manual gearboxes.so i took the plunge and took the sump off.removed the electricks.the galleries.you can now.i dont know the tecnical name for it looks like a rotor.towards the bellhousing there is a band. should this band be lose.u can move it.looks like one end is fitted and other end is floating should this noggin on the band fit on to something.

Sounds like the reverse band is in need of replacement.  There is a servo that applies the band and the other end is held by an adjusting bolt accessed from outside of the case.  Actually, it is a threaded shaft with a lock nut on the outside of the case.  You thread it in and lock the nut to hold the adjustment.  I do not have the number of turns for yours.  But, a rule of thumb would be to tighten it until it locks and then back it off a couple of turns where it does not drag when it is not applied.  I am in Las Vegas and transmission shops here sell in bands for many vehicles that can be installed without taking the transmission out of the vehicle.  You cut the old band out with tin snips and then snake the new band in.
