Nissan Repair: 1997 Nissan Maxima, nissan maxima, connector pins

Question
I plug my scanning tool into the OBDII port everthing is hooked up properly key is on and i get (vehicle is not responding)! That tells me that the ECM went out but the car still runs and drives. What would cause this?

I know this is going to sound strange but the scanner you have probably does not work with your car.  I have five different scanners.  Some work with one car and not another.  Yes, it is OBDII and they should work but some have communication errors.  Also, be sure your cable is good and the connector pins are not bent.  I have one scanner that I have replaced the cable on three times.
