Nissan Repair: 300zx belt, alternator belt, 300zx

Question
i have a 1990 300zx and Ive only had it for about 3 months. the alternator belt is the only belt that gets really hot in a matter of mins. the first belt snapped off, the second belt got hot and expanded. i bought a new alternator, radiator, and thermostat. the problem still continues with the belt overheating. i am putting on a new water pump. could that by the problem? i need help!

Answer
Hi Julian

There are 3 reasons why a belt would get so hot:

1. There is a pulley or idler that has excess drag. Remove the belt, and then spin each pulley by hand to see if it spins easily.

2. Mis-alignment on the belt. Look at the engine from the side and ensure that all the pulleys that the belt operates are aligned correctly.

3. The belt is too loose, or too tight.

Hope this helps -
