Nissan Repair: 97 Nissan Altima Question, nissan altima, d light

Question
Hi Von,

I am having an issue with my 97 Nissan Altima. I recently bought this car just to get around. About a week ago I started to hit the major highways with this car. I accelerated a lot just to test out the car and I noticed it did not go passed 80mph. I tried to figure out on my own why it was doing this so I just so happen to press the O/D button outward, which turned a light on my dashboard that says O/D light off. But now with that O/D button off I am able to go passed 80mph. So I am wondering should that button always be outward, and a light that says O/D off on my dashboard? Or should I leave the O/D button pressed in with no light on my dashboard? Please help!

Thanks,

Rich

Answer
Rich,

The Overdrive button should be in and the light off.  If the overdrive light shows off and the RPM gauge shows lower RPMs you have something going on with the transmission.  If the RPMs go up with the overdrive light on (showing it is off) then it is working normally.  If you cannot go over 80 you might try a tuneup.  New plugs do wonders.
