Nissan Repair: Nissan Altima Just stops Running, 2005 nissan altima, nissan altima

Question
I have a 2005 Nissan Altima and as I'm driving the car stops running and I have to coast to the side of the highway so i can restart the car . Sometimes it will start back right away another times it won't . I thought maybe it was the fuel filter but I was told it didn't have one then i thought it might be the fuel pump and again i was told they DO NOT MALFUNCTION . What do you think it is ?

Answer
Hi Stan -

Despite what you heard, every vehicle has a fuel filter. in fact your car has one just outside the tank, and a filter screen in the tank, where your fuel pump is. I have replace many, many fuel pumps, especially ones in the fuel tank, which is typical of latter model cars, so they do malfunction. I had to replace mine twice already (140K miles)

Anyway, Yes, this could be early signs of fuel pump failure.
Also note when your last tune up was, meaning plugs, cap, rotor, coils (if so equipped). This could also cause the problem.

Next time, if it dies, and does not start again, this is a good time to check to see whether is it fuel related or electrical. Upon the next non-start condition, spray some starter fluid into the intake boot (might have to remove a hose to get access) and quickly try to start it. If it starts, then your problem is fuel related.

Hope this helps -
