Nissan Repair: 88 Pathfinder: Code 45, fuel usage, hi john

Question
QUESTION: Black smoke on throttle "zings" Low power, some hesitation. Hard to start when warm.

How do I verify the "Leaking injector" error code? Can I take the top off and see something?

ANSWER: Hi John -

One way you can check the injector is to remove it, re-attach the terminal, and turn the ignition switch on. There should be no fuel seepage at the nipple. If there is, then the injector should be replaced.

You will just have to remove each one by one and inspect it this way. The other alternative is to replace them all. They are all the same age, so change them now, and you might avoid similar problems in the future.

QUESTION: Thank you for the quick reply.

BTW, looking down the throat when running, I see "splatter-ish" wetness at fast idle, but no drops when the ignition is off. I did only look for about 10 sec... so if it takes longer to normal drip...

What is the computer really thinking when it "thinks" error 45? Does it have a fuel flow against meter? Or is it more like "I'm too rich and I can't do anything about it"?

Answer
Hi John -

I was thinking more about the injectors for the cylinders, not the idle speed injector. Perhaps one of them is leaking through when not supposed to.

The sensor will pick up abnormal fuel usage from the injectors. Unfortunately it will not tell you which one.
