Nissan Repair: Honda Transmission, honda transmission, filter change

Question
Hi,
Let me apologize first to ask you question regarding Honda in Nissan section. However there is on one volunteering in Honda section. I really appreciate you taking your time in answering my question.

I have 2 Honda's. One is 2000 Accord and another is 2002 Civic. Both are having same issues and for both it started around 120,000 miles. The car was working fine and all the sudden the transmission would not shift reverse or forward. In both cases this happen while we were driving on freeway. Both of the cars have been recently gone through 120,000 mile service and transmission oil and filter change. I am curious to what would have caused this problem and would be the most reasonable costing solution to fix this.

Thanks
Mayank

Answer
Mayank,

If the filter and fluid are fine and the fluid was just changed then the transmissions probably need rebuilding.  I know it sounds strange.  But, high mile vehicles, over 100,000 miles, the fluid should be left alone to preclude the transmission failing.  The new fluid allows the clutches, what is left of them, to slip and once that starts it is all over.  Get a good rebuild and you should be fine for another 120,000 miles.
