Nissan Repair: 90 sentra transmission, cv joints, couple questions

My 90 automatic sentra just recently had tranmission problems, just today i was driving down the road and heard loud clicking sounds while it was in drive and reverse. it no longer drives and when we towed it, it was clicking eventhough it was in neutral. im wondering what the problem could be and how i should go about fixing it.

Couple questions - You mentioned the car does not go anymore in drive and reverse? I clicks but does not go?

Before condemning the transmission, have you checked the CV joints and axles? Perhaps the joint(s) sheared.
