Nissan Repair: 240SX manual trans. sensors passenger side., reverse light switch, neutral safety switch

Question
What are the two sensors on the passenger side of the manual 5 spd transmission on the 240SX 1991?   At this point no wires are attached.   Speedometer does not work so I am assuming that the furthest one back is for speedometer?   Is the other one a Neutral Safety switch?    Where can we get the parts?

Answer
Hi Mark -

You are correct. One sensor is for the Neutral safety, and the other may be the reverse light switch. Do your reverse lights work? If not, then that could be it.

The speedometer is operated by a cable between the trans and the instrument panel. You should see it entering the trans from the side, and a round cap hold down that unscrews. You could have a broken drive gear or snapped cable. remove the cap and inspect the gear. If the gear is OK, then the cable is removed on top by removing the instrument panel, unsnapping the housing for the cable and pulling the cable out with a long nose plier. be careful not to damage the plastic square head that fits into the panel. When replacing, lubricate it with silicone or graphite based lubricant. Do not use grease or WD40.

Hope this helps -
