Nissan Repair: timing abelt, timing chain cover, chain tension

Question
which one is it?  I call my local nissan dealership yesterday just to see amount needed to replace water pump and timing belt.  He informed me that they stop putting belts in Maxima's in 1998.  I have a 2000.

Answer
Shawn,

There is no timing belt for your engine.  The waterpump is inside the timing cover and is driven by the timing chain.  If your waterpump as failed you should not drive the car and get the pump replaced immediately.  The pump is inside and if it leaks it contaminates the oil.  Take it to a reputable shop since this is a difficult job.  There are two access covers on the timing chain cover and one releases chain tension and the other one is where the pump is.  It is like the kids game operation and should be left to those that enjoy suffering.  This is a painful job to replace the waterpump.  If your waterpump is fine leave it alone.  Wait until it fails and have the dealer or a speciality Nissan shop do the work.
