Nissan Repair: Clutch, clutch master cylinder, dot3 fluid

Question
I have a 1993 300z the clutch pedel goes to the floor and just about enguages, I read your responce to another just like mine , (the clutch was replaced three years ago -7,000 miles)so I bleed the fluid, the pedel still has a lot of play. I 'm not sure if I am bleeding it properly. I toped off the fluid, opened the bleeder, pushed the clutch in several times, released it then tightened the bleeder. Should I hold the pedel down when I am tighting up the bleeder or let the pedel back up then tighten, or is ther any other adjustments?

Answer
Richard,

You are going to need to check if the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder is blown.  As in, the seals are gone.  To bleed the system start by having someone press the clutch to the floor and while they hold the pedal to the floor open and close the bleeder screw rapidly.  If you let the pedal up while the bleeder is open air will re-enter the slave cylinder and you will have to take even more time bleeding the system.  Make sure the master cylinder stays within limits or air will get in from the top and you will have to start all over.  I like using Ford High Performance Brake Fluid.  It is DOT3 so it will not hurt your system but the boiling point is twive that of regular DOT3.  $5 bucks a pint at a Ford Dealer.  Make sure you get the white bottle with the black label.  They really do not know the difference and will try to sell you the blue label that is just normal DOT3 fluid.  If all of this bleeding does not work you will need to go with a new slave cylinder first and if that does not do it then you are looking at the clutch master cylinder too.  CHeck to make sure the hose between the master and slave is in good condition.
