Nissan Repair: 1995 nissan transmission, lockup torque converter, nissan transmission

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1995 nissan pickup with 3.0 4x4 automatic
Sometimes it goes into reverse and sometimes not, it also when cold sometimes as soon as you put into drive it stalls like you dumped the clutch but its a automatic.  I changed fluid and filter and still the same fluid was not burned at time of change.

ANSWER: Jerry,

Two things here.  The lockup torque converter has a switch that tells it when to lock and release.  This is probably what is causing the torque converter to stay locked when you put it into gear.  The reverse is most probably the reverse solenoid not applying.  Sounds like you need to take it to a shop and have them put it on a scanner to see what the solenoid is doing.

QUESTION: thank you for your help.  Can you give me some ideas on how to track the switch or test the solenoid so ion can repair myself.  thanks

Answer
Jerry,

If you want to do it yourself get the torque converter lockup sensor and replace it.  Do the same for the reverse solenoid and disconnect the battery for five minutes to clear the code and you might have the issues resolved.  WIT is a good source and they are cheap and have phone support so you can describe your problem and the part you need.  https://www.wittrans.com/Default.aspx?gclid=CPn9y9yEsp8CFQJaagodnG1H0g
