Nissan Repair: 1997 nissan altima wont stay running, air control valve, nissan altima

Question
QUESTION: My car will run for 10 minutes idling then the rpm's drop and will not start back up for about at least 12 hours. I changed the Mass air and the fuel filter. What do you think could be the problem? could it be the iac?

ANSWER: Kristen,

You will need to check the ignition and fuel to see which is cutting out.  Second, if you can get a scanner since your car is a 1997 you could read the computer codes to see what it says.  Email me back with the codes and what you find if the fuel pressure is dropping off when the car dies or if the spark fails.  The fuel would be the pump or relay and the spark would be crank angle indicator, distributor or the ignitor.

QUESTION: Well we already ran the code reader.. and it was the p0505 which is idle air control

Answer
Kristen,

I would start with replacement of the idle air control valve and then disconnec tthe battery to reset the computer to zero.  The code reader will erase codes.  But, disconnecting the battery will clear the block learn curve for the memory.
