Nissan Repair: 1994 Nissan maxima gxe automatic sohc, nissan maxima, stranger things

Question
I recently had the engine replaced in this car.  The transmission
shifted fine before the engine was swapped. After swap the trans will
only shift into first and second gear-not third and fourth.  ECM and trans ECM
have been verified good.  Trans ECM is showing code for speed sensor
so changed it.  Trans will still only go into first and second. Linkages appear
to be fine.  I don't think trans is bad-it worked perfect before swap. Any
ideas as to what we are missing ?  Thanks Charles

Answer
Charles,

I would check the wiring to the speed sensor and follow it back to the full up harness and look for breaks or if it was squashed during the engine swap.  I actually had a car come to me where they squished the harness between the engine and transmission and it was a wonder it even made it to my shop.  I ended up doing many wire replaecments and soldered and shrink fit connections to correct the damaged harness.  Stranger things have happened.  The computer picks up the vehicle speed from the harness, at the instrument cluster.  If you pulled the cluster you can see where it ties into the speedometer feed.  If the wire is broke down by the VSS you found your problem.  Did the code come back?  Email me back and we'll go from there.
