Nissan Repair: nissan maxima, nissan maxima, flat blade

Question
QUESTION: My Car will not move out of park I pressed a key down in the shift lock still will not move out of park.

can you help?

ANSWER: Tammy,

There is an electric shift interlock that keeps the car in park until you have the car started and the brake pedal depressed.  Either the switch on the pedal has failed or the shift release solenoid has failed.  You can get your car out of park by removing the clip on the console.  Above, close to the top of the shifter.  Once you remove the little cover you can put a flat blade screwdriver or the like in the hold and push down.  The shifter will release.  That is a stop gap measure and you will need to have the car looked at to see if it the brake switch or the solenoid in the future.  But, the screwdriver trick will work for now.

QUESTION: I stated on my my first question that I stuck the screw driver and also my key in the shift lock by the shifter already any other suggestions

ANSWER: Tammy,

That means the solenoid is jammed and the shifter cover will have to come off.  I have seem some, as in my wife's Maxima where Coke from one of the kids was spilled and that stuck the shifter solenoid.  If you remove the cover you can get to the solenoid and WD-40 it and then push it doen.  It looks like a plastic button.  Sorry for not noticing your note.  I work 12 hours a day at my regular job and do this for free at night.

QUESTION: Oh no its okay I really appreciate your information its really helpful.

My other question is when you say shifter cover do you mean the whole panel that goes over the shifter and emergency brake? If yes can you tell me how to go about removing that like where the screws are and is it simple to put back on once removed?

Answer
Tammy,

The cover that goes over the shifter should come off and then the console itself.  Yes, you can take the eitire console out and that makes access easier.  Pull the front seats forward and there are screws towards the bottom, two under the faceplate in front and a couple in the console itself.
