Nissan Repair: 2000 Nissan Maxima Transmission, vehicle speed sensor, nissan maxima

Question
I have been having an issue with my 2000 Maxima SE.  After driving at Interstate speeds 60-70 MPH, it seems as thought it jumps out of gear.  I then have to come to a complete stop put it in park and then back to drive and it works fine.  It started last summer and I changed the fluid and it didn't happen through the entire winter.  It has started again since it has gotten warmer.  The last time the engine light came on and the OBD stated that the output speed sensor was faulty, but wouldn't the speedometer malfuntion if that was the problem?  Also, I have researched that it could possibly be the shift computer.  Please give me your opinion as to what you believe it to be as it is appears to be happening more frequently.  Thanks,  David

Answer
Mark,

You are correct on all points.  First, the fluid change is the first step to see if it corrects the problem.  Next would be the vehicle speed sensor.  If the computer reads a strange speed, even if the speedometer looks correct, it will shift incorrectly.  Lastly, I have a 2000 Maxima SE and my transmission computer did fail and had to be replaced.  You could skip all of these steps and find a shop that has a Nissan specific transmission code reader and see what they say.
