Nissan Repair: 1991 Nissan Maxma, nissan maxima, automatic transmissions

Question
I currently own a 1991 Nissan Maxima.  The transmission shifts fine into drive and reverse but when driving the car does not want to shift out of 1st.  And when it does it shifts anywhere from 4500-5000 rpm.  Then it will not stay in 2nd for very long and right away shift to 3rd.  If you have overdrive disengaged the car will stay in 3rd and drive fine but if it is engaged then it will shift to overdrive but sounds like it is in neutral and will just sit there and rev when you hit the gas.  I have been told that all I need to do is get the transmission flushed because the filter inside the tranny is clogged but I do not know much about automatic transmissions and would like a second opinion

Answer
Jacob,

The transmission could use a filter and fluid change.  But, the non shifting problem is the governor being blocked or plugged.  If the filter and fluid change does not resolve the problem the transmission will have to be diagnosed and repaired by a qualified shop.
