Nissan Repair: Neutral Safty Switch, neutral safety switch, air control valve

Question
QUESTION: I purchased a 94 Nissan Altima for my daughter, we have replaced the battery, alternator, starter and now she can drive it but it will just die on her. If I put it in neutral it will start up and then drive for a little bit. She was sitting at a stop light and it shook then died what do you think it is? I think it may be the neutral safety switch but not sure and if so can i just replace it, how expensive and where exactly is it?

ANSWER: Heather,

The neutral safety switch is on the transmission and you can see if from the front of the engine compartment, looking down, drivers side,  Just a matter of unplugging the old one and removing it and replacing it with the new one.  You will need to follow directions to set it since your car has to start in neutral and park and the reverse lighs have to work.  A Haynes Manual is an awesome investment for adjustment procedures and pictures.

QUESTION: from what I sent you above do you think that is it? or do you think it may just need a tune up?

Answer
Heather,

If the car will not start in park then it is the neutral safety switch.  Otherwise, you need to look at a tuneup and cleaning of the throttle body and inspection and cleaning of the idle air control valve or even a replacement of the valve.  Someone needs to read the computer to make sure there are no error codes being stored.
