Nissan Repair: abs light, wheel sensors, two pints

Question
I have a 2001 frontier 4cyl 2wd reg cab 167000 miles.I've noticed when driving at night I can see the abs light on, but its very  dim. The abs seems to work ok.

Answer
Rich,

If the ABS light is on you need to check the system.  First, look at all four wheel sensors to make sure none are broken or wires are torn out.  There is a tone ring at each wheel and a sensor with a harness.  If all of these are fine bleed the brakes.  That is, no one changes brake fluid.  It is hygroscopic (really dry) as in no water.  Therefore, it loves to attract water and the water is compressible compared to brake fluid.  Plus it is heavier so it pools at each wheel.  Now, when you do a panic brake stop the ABS computer figures out that it cannot fully control each wheel and a code is thrown.  If you bleed the brakes with good brake fluid like Ford High Performacne Brake Fluid it makes the brakes much firmer.  The Ford High Performance Brake Fluid has twice the boiling point of regular fluid or I would not recommend it.  You have to go to a Ford Dealership and ask for the High Performance Fluid since the parts guys do not even know they have it.  Black lable bottle not the blue one.  Two pints and you should be fine.  After you bleed the brakes disconnect the battery for five minutes and reconnect it and the light should be gone and you will have super brakes.
