Nissan Repair: 95 Altima stuck in park, haynes manual, altima

Question
Out of the blue, i can't get my 95 Altima to shift out of park...engine starts fine, the button won't depress so I can shift gears.  I can hear the clicking in the ignition, but it won't budge?  Ever hear of this before?  Could it have anything to with the automatic locks?

Answer
Rob,

The shift interlock is broken.  There is a switch on the brake pedal to release it and there is a solenoid in the shifter that keeps it in park.  Either one of these is defective.  You can get around the safety, for now, by pulling the cover and pressing a small screwdriver in the hold to release it.  If you have the owners manual there is usually a picture.  If not, a Haynes Manual shows the process.  Look at your shifter and at the front edge there is usually a small cover, really small, that a tiny screwdriver fits in.
