Subaru Repair: Timing Belt on a 96 Subaru Impreza Outback, subaru impreza outback, subaru impreza

Question
I have a 1996 Subaru Impreza Outback with a 2.2 engine.  I need to know what are the timing specs so i can time it correctly. I have a timing light and all, just need the specs for it to be correct. thank you

Answer
Michael,

The ignition timing has never been adjustable on a U.S. spec Impreza, and that is what you would check with a timing light.  The computer controls the timing there is no mechanical adjustment or timing check procedure with a timing light.  The timing value is read with the Subaru Select monitor connected the the diagnostic connector.

The timing belt is not timed with a light rather a set of marks.  You can find the timing belt installation marks in your favorite service publication I would suggest the factory service manual, which would be a real good idea if you are going to service this car your self, it may save your bacon.
