Nissan Repair: engine odor and battery issues, nissan maxima, high beams

Question
2000 Nissan Maxima
Have had to jump battery at least 4 times in  2 weeks
also engine odor .no warning lights have  come on

Answer
Hi Sally -

The odor is probably a sulfur smell coming from the battery.

It could be either the battery or the alternator. If you have not replaced the battery in more than 2 years, I would recommend replacement. Better change it now than get stuck at a less desirable location. I my experience, batteries have a 2 year useful life.

Secondly, to keep the battery charged, check the alternator. You may do this at any auto shop, but if you have a volt meter, I can walk you through a simple test - Start the car and connect the voltmeter to the battery. It should read between 12 - 14 volts. Turn on the high beams of your headlights and note the voltage again - it should read the same, closer to 14 volts. Rev the engine and it should rise a bit. If it goes below 12V, replace the alternator.

Hope thie helps!!
