Nissan Repair: 94 Altima trans wont shift fron 2ond, nissan service manual, vacuum switch

Question
i removed a knowingly good engine and Trans from one car (which i was driving) and installed it in another with a better body.
Engine and Trans were a perfect match. only difference between cars is transplant has abs.
engine turned right over. Trans goes great in reverse. only second in forward. also the OD light flashing and air bag light flashing. does the Trans have some sort of chip in it to connect to computer that would make it different or should i look harder and maybe missed something?

Answer
Bob,

You have a sensor or a connector or a broken wire or one that is grounded improperly.  That is what causes the transmission to lock into second gear.  That is a safety feature to keep from hurting the transmission.  I would check all of these out and especially look for the vacuum switch that allows for the torque converter to lockup.  Also, there is a temperature sensor that has to be hooked up for the car to shift properly.  The airbag should be fine if the sensors up front have not been damaged in the engine / transmission swap.  Check the sensors and wires up front.  Follow this procedure from Nissan to reset the airbag.  If this does not do the trick there is something wrong and the car should be scanned to find the problem.

Procedure to Reset the Air Bag System Warning Light
According to the Nissan service manual, the steps to reset the air bag system warning light are the fallow:
1.   Turn ignition switch from OFF to ON.
2.   Air Bag warning lamp is on for 7 seconds and turns off, the turn ignition switch OFF within 1 second after the lamp turn off.
3.   After ignition switch is turned OFF, wait for more than 3 seconds.
4.   Repeat steps 1 to 3 twice. (Perform 3 times in total.)
5.   Turn Ignition switch ON.
6.   The SRS lamp has been reset it.
If the warning light can not be reset, more diagnosis will be require. Please contact you Nissan dealer for more information.
