Nissan Repair: 95 Nissan Altima, starter solenoid, nissan altima

Question
Last few weeks on a few occasions the engine would not crank after turning key to start position.  Problem finally became permanent yesterday.  Have power for everything else.  Battery/battery cables are O.K.  Can test starter.....hope its not ignition switch........looks hard to replace.  Your thoughts please.........Steve in IN

Answer
Hi Steve -

Please do this test -

get a hammer and tap the starter a few times, and try to start the car. If it starts, then replace the starter. The tapping releases built up carbon between contacts.

If it still does not start, then get a voltmeter and attach one side to the starter solenoid, and the other to ground. Try to start the car and note voltage. If you see voltage when the key is turned, then replace the starter/solenoid. If there is no voltage, check the ignition switch.

Hope this helps -
