Nissan Repair: engine burning oil/timing chain whine, 2005 nissan altima, nissan altima

Question
Hi Von. I have a 2005 Nissan Altima with the VQ35 V6 engine and manual trans. It is burning oil at an increasing rate, currently 1 qt. every 800 miles. I pulled the three front spark plugs today and performed a compression test. All three plugs had weird white deposits on them and had a strong weird odor, almost like ammonia. I first performed a dry compression test of the front 3 cylinders, got readings of 135 psi-150 psi (engine warm). I then performed a wet compression test, and the readings jumped to 220-250 psi. Is this an indication that the rings are shot? Having researched problems with this vehicle, I am aware that the catalytic converters can deteriorate internally and get sucked back into the combustion chambers, scoring the cylinder walls - I wonder if that's what my weird deposits are on the spark plugs? Do you have any experience with these motors and these symptoms? Also, I have the timing chain whine that was the subject of a large TSB covering VQ35 engines from 2004-2006. Have you heard of any chains or tensioners breaking if this condition goes left untreated? Nissan denied a goodwill warranty claim to have these chains replaced. I currently have 111,000 miles on the car. Thanks,

Answer
Jim,

Sounds like the factory is going to have to get involved in your problem since the engines rings have gone out.  You are going to have a hell of a time with Nissan North America.  I would follow the procedure in the owners manual and start the process since it appears that the rings have gone due to a mechanical defect.  Since you are still under warranty I would run the distance with the factory to get the problem resolved since the dealer is not going to help...
