my nissan maxima speedometer stopped working

What year is the maxima? Does the odometer not work as well?

First thing is to check your speedometer cable. Unscrew the connection at the transmission and check if the cable is seating well, and the connection into the transmission is OK (check the gear if all the teeth are intact). If all that is fine, then you have to go into the other side, behind the instrument panel. Unfortunately for that you need to remove the panel. With the panel out, you can remove the cable and inspect it. Lubricate it with a non residual grease, and then replace.
