Nissan Repair: nissan altima vibration, compression test results, nissan altima

Question
I have a 1995 altima gxe with a mystical vibration problem.  The vibe inside the cab is low tone at idle, enough to give you a headache.  In park, or in gear results are the same.  Acceleration changes the frequency of the vibe, or just speeds it up in other words.  Checked for engine miss, found none.  Replaced plugs and wires just for good measure, with no improvement.  Replaced two worn engine mounts, with no improvement.  Checked timing, all is well there.  Ran compression test, results are- #1=175psi, #2=175psi, #3=172psi, #4=170psi.  Finally I replaced the harmonic balancer, and this is where it gets interesting,  after replacement of balancer the vibrations frequency was altered only at driving speed and only in foreward drive.  That is to say that if the frequency was say 500 pulses per second before, it is 1000 per second or better now.  Reverse is same as before, and idleing in park or in gear up to about 1200 rpm still vibrates same.  This suggests a problem in the trans to me but why on earth did the harmonic affect it at all if it's in the trans.  Without calling in a team of vibration analists, all I can think of now is possible flywheel\flexplate problems such as a weight falling off, or possibly a fin broken in the torque converter.  I am out of ideas and out of money, please help,                                 thank you

Answer
Hi Michael -

Out of ideas and out of money - sounds like my life -

Anyway, Have you checked the transmission mount? With it worn, it will contact the frame and give you all kinds of noises.

Also, with the car running, you can check for noises by using a mechanic's stethoscope. You may also hold a long screwdriver to your ear and get the same results. Just touch various parts of the engine with the end of the screwdriver and listen. Also check the alternator pulley, power steering, and just everywhere you can think of, including under the vehicle. You will quickly find the source.

Hope this helps
