Nissan Repair: nissan air bag modeul, controller area network, self diagnosis

Question
where is the module located thanks

Answer
Frank,

The module is under the dash on the drivers side.  If the car has been in a wreck the module would not be defective.  If airbags have deployed you need to replace them and then get a Consult II or a generic airbag scan tool and reset the module.  If the Consult II or generic scan tool has stated that the self diagnosis is showing a BCM failure then replace it.  These almost never go bad and usually there is an airbag that is not transmitting on the controller area network (CAN).  Each has their own address, much like an old token ring system, since the bandwidth on the CAN is so restrictive, so it is just a matter of identifying the offending unit on the CAN.  Email me back and let me know if I can be of more help and let me know more specifics on what you are working.  Year and model and the specific issue.
