Nissan Repair: Nissan Starter, nissan 4x4, amp meter

Question
Hey There,
I have a 95 nissan 4x4 3.0L V6 pickup, started having trouble with the starter. Turn the key and just get a click, I could get the truck to start by bumping the key a few times and the starter would finally engage. Decided to get a new starter thinking it was the starter, well new starter and it is still happening, but now I have to rock the truck to move the motor and then the starter will finally engage. I have a new battery and the man that installed the new starter checked for voltage and I am getting correct voltage.

Please help, I am tired of rocking my truck just to get it to start.

Thanks,

Bruce

Answer
Bruce,

When you say you have to rock the truck to get it to start that would mean that the drive gear from the starter is not pushing out hard enough to get the teeth to line up.  So, by rocking the truck the teeth line up.  This means a weak starter or low voltage.  I would get an amp meter and check the draw at the starter when you turn the key.  If that is the case (low voltage/high amp draw) then check the battery connections and the fuse links.  When I say weak starter the solenoid that throws the drive gear into the teeth of the flywheel.  If this electromagnet is weak or not getting enough juice the starter will do what you describe.  Those are the choices...
