Nissan Repair: Frontier brakes, metal slides, shims

Question
I have a 2001 Frontier reg. cab 4CYL 2WD 5speed 150,000 miles I had front brakes put on by a mechanic (not Nissan) sometimes when I apply the brakes I hear a loud snap coming from the front brakes, sounds like the left side, the brakes work fine. The mechanic took it back and checked it out and found nothing wrong, I also pulled the wheels and everything looked good. I think he used NAPA brakes, any ideas? Thank Rich

Answer
Rich,

Go down to Nissan and pick up a brake shim and anti-rattle kit.  $24 bucks and it is just a matter of taking the pads off and replacing the slides and adding the shims.  The pad is moving back anf forth in the torque member and that is what is making the noise.  It is not dangerous but it is noisy.  The shim kit with new metal slides makes the noise go away.  Not too many people know that this kit exists.  But, Nissan has it if you ask the parts guy for it.
